What’s Playing at the Grand Theatre?
The historical Grand Theatre is worth a visit in its own right, although there are still performances, concerts and special events taking place at this landmark establishment year-round. First opened in 1901 as the New Grand Opera House, the popular venue quickly became a “hauntingly” good time for all. The founder, Mr. Small, managed the theatre until his disappearance in 1919 on the same day he deposited one million dollars into a bank account, had lunch with his wife as normal—and was never heard from again. However, weeks later, the theatre’s night watchman says he saw Mr. Small in the Grand Theatre. His ghost allegedly still haunts the grounds to this day.
The theatre was bought by Famous Players Inc. in 1924, who turned it into a movie theatre. Then, from 1945-1971, the London Little Theatre operated it as the most popular amateur theatre venue in Ontario. In 1977, a $5 million renovation took place, and in 1978 it was dubbed the most gorgeous theatre in all of Canada.
What to Expect
You’ll find the stunning Proscenium Arch Theatre with classic theatrical designs, crafted for music and sound to travel well into the audience. Recurring programs include Tuesday Talks with chats before performances in the Poster Lounge and Grand Conversations where you can meet and mingle with the cast after the shows.
